Murray Rose, ‘Swag’ in Ride The Wild Surf (1964). “Nearly 50 years after the event, the exclusion of champion Australian swimmer Murray Rose from the 1964 Tokyo Olympics continues to polarise opinions in the swimming world. Rose had won three gold medals at the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games and a fourth in Rome in 1960. In 1964 he was still breaking world records and was tipped to win gold in the men’s 1,500 metres freestyle in Tokyo. But Rose was controversially excluded from the Australian team because he hadn’t swum in the Australian Championships eight months earlier – at the time he was acting in a Hollywood movie, Ride The Wild Surf. … Rose, known as the golden boy of Australian swimming, died from acute leukaemia 18 months ago. Many have described him as Australia’s greatest swimmer, but those close to him say it was his interests outside the pool that gave him a winning edge. He was a vegetarian and follower of an Indian philosopher, long before it became fashionable. Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
