films and filming april 1968

sweet ride, the film magazine

The Sweet Ride (1968) soundtrack is chock-full of brief incidentals — from Dusty Springfield’s vocal on the title track to the instrumental variation “Sock Me Choo Choo,” from bossa novas to airy wordless-chorus instrumentals.

Fuzz-tone guitar makes “My Name Is Mr. Clean” nearly psychedelic, but unfortunately the rest of the song is mired in big-band squareness; even the Swinging Sixties bossa novas are a few years too late.

Pete Rugolo hits many of the same areas that made several Lalo Schifrin soundtracks great, but unlike Schifrin, Rugolo lacks the killer pop instinct.

It all sounds like soundtrack music (the average cut is only about two minutes long), and there’s nothing here that hadn’t been done better elsewhere, earlier.
